Local Government Reorganisation – Update (September 2026)

On 7 September 2026, the Government announced a pause and review of local government reorganisation (LGR) decisions in several areas, including Worcestershire, following updated legal advice. This follows the Government’s decision in July 2026 to reorganise Worcestershire’s seven councils into two new unitary authorities — North Worcestershire Council and South Worcestershire Council (the latter covering Malvern Hills, Worcester City and Wychavon, including Honeybourne).

The review does not affect Surrey’s reorganisation, which is proceeding as planned, but Worcestershire is among the 14 areas whose decisions have been paused pending further review.

At this stage, local elections scheduled for May 2027 are expected to continue on existing council boundaries rather than as “shadow” elections to new unitary authorities, while the review is carried out.
